What questions do I need to know about refining my precious metal waste?

Depending on how much you have and the material whether gold , silver, platinum or mixed, that should define how often you should send your dust to your refiner

Consider these criteria:

  1. What is the bulk of my dust? i.e. Gold, silver, platinum
  2. Cost of refining
  3. Metal markets

How to chose a refiner ?

  1. Can I combine sweeps and dust
  2. How much does my refiner charge?
  3. What are the charges for each metal, I.E. Platinum, gold, silver. Many refiners charge differently for each one.
  4. How quickly do I get paid?
  5. If I trade my metal for refined material I. E. wire, grain or sheet do i receive a better rate or do I get a discount on the refined material they may sell?

TAKE AWAYS:

Generally a production bench jeweler should see about $100.00  to $3,000.00 per year of refinable metal. We generally send it out once a year.

If there is a service, a refining charge,  it may be too high to send a small amount of your refinble material and you would be paying more for the refining costs than the material is worth. There fore stockpiling for a period of time is recommended.

Ask these questions of your refiner and  ask your friends who they use as well as their experience with their refiner and you will be able to best decide what, where and when to refine.
